Presented by National Council for the Social Studies
This National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) webinar invites educators to explore the role of patriotism as a purpose of public education by tracing its evolution through the history of American schooling. The session examines how definitions of patriotic education have shifted across different eras โ from the founding of public schools through the present day โ and asks a provocative question: what should the purpose of social studies be in today's classrooms? Participants will engage with primary sources and historical perspectives that illuminate the tensions between civic pride, critical thinking, and democratic participation that have always been at the heart of social studies education. NCSS is the largest professional association in the United States devoted solely to social studies education, and its webinar series consistently provides thoughtful, research-informed content that helps teachers navigate complex topics with confidence and nuance.
Evidence base: Grounded in historical analysis of primary sources and the evolution of public education policy in the United States
