Poetry Toolbox

Presented by ETAQ

Friday 15 May 2026·11:00 pm

Students are reading less widely than ever before, yet English teachers are still expected to equip students with the analytical and creative skills demanded by the senior curriculum. Poetry offers a powerful way to bridge this gap, its brevity and intensity make it the perfect form for developing deep thinking, close reading, and expressive writing. Join us to discover how poetry can transform engagement and learning in your classroom and reignite a love of poetry in their classrooms.

This practical, hands-on workshop draws on over 30 years of classroom experience and research to explore fresh ways of engaging students with poetry. Developed by an English teacher whose doctoral research investigates poetry in the secondary curriculum, the session responds directly to the challenges faced by today’s English teachers, declining reading stamina, an overcrowded curriculum, and a lack of confidence in teaching poetry.

Participants will leave with a toolkit of adaptable classroom strategies designed to build both confidence in teaching poetry and inspire creativity in students. Whether you’re an early-career teacher finding your feet or a seasoned teacher looking for new energy and direction, this workshop will help you make poetry a powerful and joyful part of your English program once again.
